Among this group is Montana Gem. We have been hand mining claims on the Yogo property for over 30 years as part of a group securing access through the Sapphire Village land ownership. This is strictly a hands-on operation utilizing picks shovels and rocker boxes to separate the gravel from the earth.
This gem is usually found using a different method compared to traditional pit or underground mine. The stone is found by washing off the gravels found in the stream deposits. Montana is the best state in the U.S. for sapphire mining and there are several lo ions where rockhounds can pay to dig for the valuable gem.

Gem Mountain Sapphire Mine This is Montana’s largest and oldest sapphire mine. While there are many areas in Montana that are known for some of the finest sapphire stones Gem Mountain Sapphire Mine is famous for creating beautiful stones out of the rough collected sapphire.
A more realistic price for 3- to 10-carat sorted mine-run material is in the range of $5000 per kilogram with many kilograms of mine-run rough selling for $1000 per kilogram. The sapphires from the Missouri River gravels in Lewis and Clark County are a mixture of rough and pitted crystals showing well defined faces and completely rounded and smooth-surface highly stream worn pebbles.
The Montana sapphire material we offer is still in the state and is brought in from private claims. We carry gem material from the El Dorado Bar of the Missouri River near Helena Montana as well as Rock Creek sapphire material from Melee Gulch near the Gem Mountain Peak in the Sapphire Mountains of Philipsburg.
