Procedure to Check the Income Tax Refund Status Online using PAN Number in India for free and this enquiry for current Income Tax Refund Status can be done without login into Income Tax India Website. But basic thing which is required for checking the current tax refund status is PAN Card Number and Assessment Year for which you want to check status of refund. Income Tax refund status is available for last 10 Years i.e. Income Tax Refund Status from year 2004 to 2013 but for only those assessee who had filed their return online and one has to select 2009-2010 for Year 2009, 2010-2011 for Year 2010, 2011-2012 for Year 2011, 2012-2013 for year 2012 and 2013-2014 for Year 2013 refund.

As refund status will show when refund was dispatched and for what amount, which is very helpful in planning personal finances. One of the best tax planning strategies to manage the income tax refund is by investing that amount in tax saving investment plans, so it will reduce your tax burden at the year end and in return also increase your Income tax refund amount for next year.  

Online refund status facility is launched by the Income Tax Department in January 2007 for the Non Corporate taxpayers also known as Income Tax Refund Banker Scheme and this scheme is launched for Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Pune and Kanpur and currently this is scheme is applicable to whole India. Income Tax Refund will be issued by the State Bank of India; Mumbai .i.e. SBI will process the Income Tax Refund for all the income tax payers. Income Tax Refund is paid by the Income Tax Department in two modes and Assessee has to select the mode at the time of filling of Income tax Return.

  • ECS (Directly Credit to Bank Account of Tax Payer)
  • Cheque (Cheque is issued in name of Tax Payer given in the PAN Card)

Refund status can be tracked by entering the PAN and Assessment Year for which refund is to be tracked.

What should I do if I changed my address given in Income tax return?

The tax payer should contact its Assessing Officer and inform about the change in the correspondence address.

What should I do if my bank account is changed or closed given in Income Tax Return?

In case of change or updation in the bank account number the taxpayer should provide the correct account number along with the MICR code where credit is to be effected to the Assessing Officer and tax payer who had E-Filled the Income Tax Return has to send Income Tax Response sheet to CPC Bangalore.

Refund Status Showing “PAID STATUS” through ECS but amount is not credited in Your Bank Account?

In case credit is not effected in the taxpayer account through ECS but the refund advice has been received by the taxpayer AND the status shown is “paid”- in that case, the tax payer should contact his bank or SBI. You should contact SBI at the following address.

          Subject: Incorrect Communication Reference Number

          I have received a communication related to Receipt of ITR-V from Centralized Processing Center, Bangalore for my PAN AFTJ****R and Assessment Year 2013-14. The Communication Reference Number mentioned in the communication is CPC/1314/G4/80688159. As per my ITR form sl no. (19) Refund (17-15) if 17 is greater than 15 — 19– 49100/-. But when I checked in incometaxindiaefiling gov in/ it says “No demand No refund” for the same assessment year. I tried to contact CPC on their help line number 1800-4252229 it says that the Communication number is incorrect. I tried to submitt a refund request in incometaxindiaefiling gov in/ here also it says that Communication Reference Number CPC/1314/G4/80688159 is incorrect. because of this i’m unable to contact CPC to clarify the same. Please help whoom should I contact to correct the Communication Reference Number and to get my refund.

  1. I have not yet received by Refund for the assessment year 2011-2012. On further checking the status it was found that the cheque for refund has been sent to my address on 22 Dec 12 and as no one was there to receive the cheque it was returned back with the status as “Door Locked”. Now as it has been returned back to the source from where it was generated please help me to know how can i get it delivered again to my address. We have already requested the postman to inform us if there is any such letter.

      For the year 2011-12 the filing of my IT Return was done manually and not through e-filing and I do not have the CPC Communication Reference and the Refund Sequence Order. As I dont have the information with me I cannot raise the request to process the refund through e-filing website.Could you please tell me what is the procedure to process the refund if the filing was done manually.

    1. Alikhan Ji, For Physical filing of Income Tax Return, you have to contact your Assessing Officer.i.e Income Tax Department
      You can Check Your Assessing Officer(AO) Address From Here

      One thing you must know that You Should never give them any bribe and do all the communication with them in writing,
      File Your Written Request with your AO, that you had not received refund for 2009-10 and 2011-12 and take receipt on your copy.
      Its their Duty to Pay Your refund,never pay any bribe.

    1. Anuradha JI, As per Income Department calculation there is no refund for your Income Tax return. Income Tax Department must have sent you intimation letter under section 143 for processing of your income tax return.In case if you have not received you can again request for intimation for return u/s 143

    1. Rohit Ji, it depends on refund amount.. For higher value refund amount it may take time. Only option is to wait for intimation from income tax department under section 143(1)

    My PAN : AAQPP2775D.
    I had filed the income tax return for assessment year 2009-10 manually at Haridwar on 13/07/2009 with acknowledgement no:785.
    As per Form-16 issued by employer (PSU)-
    Tax payable was : Rs 2,42,991.00
    Tax deducted at source by employer was : Rs. 2,69,305.00
    Tax refundable was: Rs 26,314
    The Income tax department sent me a refund cheque of Rs.6360.00 only on 17 Feb,2011. The intimation letter of Income tax deptt. mentioned that total tax deposited by the employer was Rs.249351.00
    My employer had already deducted the excess TDS from my salary and had deposited the same to income tax deptt.
    I have already submitted twice my written request to the commissioner of Income Tax, Haridwar for refund of balance amount of Rs.19,954.00 but no refund of the requested balance amount has been received till date.
    Now on on checking the Form-26 for A/y 2009-10 , it is found that the total tax deducted as well as deposited by employer is Rs.265977.00. Though this figure is still not accurate , it well establishes that there is balance refund payable by income tax deptt.
    please guide what should I do now to claim the balance refund due for A/Y 2009-10.

  26. Hi Dear,I have filied my ITR-V for the year of 2012-13. By my mistake I miss one digit from my a.c. no.I also mail to ,But the said that they have paid to your bank & you contact to your bank. Then I go to my bank & explain the issue. My bank said that if account no. is not proper, the tranction will automaticaly cancelled at that time. So pls suggest what I have to do.

    1. Satish ji, there are 2 things you don’t get the refund for filed return or don’t get the TDS in your income tax account i.e is FORM 16/16A
      if don’t get the refund then contact you Assessee officer .i.e Income Tax Officer of your ward
      and for TDS contact deductor
